General Skilled Migration (GSM)
GSM is a highly competitive, points-tested program. You do not need an employer to sponsor you, but you must score enough points (based on age, English ability, work experience, and qualifications) to receive an invitation to apply.
Key Subclasses:
- Skilled Independent (Subclass 189): A highly coveted permanent visa for workers in occupations on the MLTSSL. No state or employer sponsorship required.
- Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190): A permanent visa that requires nomination by an Australian State or Territory government. Your occupation must be on the specific state's list.
- Skilled Work Regional (Subclass 491): A 5-year provisional visa requiring state nomination or family sponsorship in a designated regional area. Leads to the 191 PR visa after 3 years.
Employer Sponsored Visas
If you have an Australian employer willing to sponsor you, these visas provide a more direct route that bypasses the competitive GSM points test.
- TSS Visa (Subclass 482): A temporary visa allowing you to work for a sponsoring employer for 2 to 4 years. Many applicants use this to build Australian work experience before transitioning to PR.
- Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186): A permanent residency visa. It can be accessed via the Direct Entry stream (requires 3 years post-qualification experience) or the Temporary Residence Transition stream.
- Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Subclass 494): A 5-year provisional visa for regional employers.
The Skills Assessment Challenge
