Why You Need a Skills Assessment

Before you can lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) for the points-tested General Skilled Migration program (Subclasses 189, 190, 491), or apply for most Employer Sponsored visas (like the 482 or 186), you must prove that your skills meet Australian standards.

Major Assessing Authorities

  • Engineers Australia (EA): Assesses engineering qualifications. Often requires the writing of complex Competency Demonstration Reports (CDRs) if your degree is not Washington Accord accredited.
  • Australian Computer Society (ACS): Assesses IT professionals. Focuses heavily on the alignment between the subjects you studied and the specific IT occupation you are nominating.
  • Trades Recognition Australia (TRA): Assesses mechanics, carpenters, chefs, and other trade workers. Usually involves practical demonstrations of skill.

Documenting Your Work Experience

Proving you worked in a role is not as simple as submitting a resume. Authorities require extensive, highly specific evidence that your day-to-day duties perfectly match the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) definition for your role.

The "Statement of Service"

The most critical document is the Statement of Service (or Reference Letter) from your employer. It cannot be a generic HR letter. It must detail your exact duties, salary, working hours, and reporting structure on company letterhead.
